Therapist Podcast: Your New Tool for Private Practice Growth

Can a Therapist Podcast Help You Market Your Therapy Business?

Are you looking for an easy and exciting way to market your therapy practice? Cue the launch of your therapist podcast! Hear us out, podcasting is not only fun (yes, even for introverts); it’s also a powerful way to scale your private practice.

With around 80 million podcast listeners in the United States tuning in weekly to learn and be entertained by their favorite podcasters, it’s easy to see why this platform can propel a business forward into its next stage of growth.

Today, we go over how to start a therapist podcast, what equipment you need, and how to figure out topics that resonate with your listeners.

Should You Launch a Podcast for Your Therapy Practice?

Podcasting is a fantastic marketing tool, so yes, if you have the time, energy, and desire, we think you should launch a private practice podcast. If you’re in the stage of private practice where you’re looking to grow, want to reach more clients, and have a greater impact, starting a therapy podcast is the way to go. Here are some additional reasons for launching a therapy podcast:

  • Builds confidence!

  • Helps you connect with more clients.

  • Shows you’re an expert in your field.

  • Builds trust with your audience.

  • Increases your reach and impact.

  • Generates another form of income.*

*As your podcast grows, you’ll be able to bring on sponsors relevant to the messages you’re sharing with your audience, which means another income stream! Plus, you might even find new ideal-fit clients who listened to your podcast and knew you were the therapist for them!

How Podcasting Can Help You Get More Therapy Clients

Podcasting episodes are evergreen, meaning once you release them, they’re on major directories, like iTunes, to stay, which means they can help you reach more clients as a therapist. Thousands – if not millions – of listeners tune into podcasts every week, which means you’re getting free marketing for as long as those episodes are up.

And podcasting also gives you a platform to shine and show your expertise as a therapist. This builds more trust between you and your listeners, which makes them more likely to contact you to schedule a session. People like to interact with those they like, know, and trust. Podcasting is your platform to be your authentic self, and being deeply authentic is what will attract more clients who are aligned with the work you do.

You might be thinking “Can I still get local clients with a podcast that has so much reach?” The answer is ABSOLUTELY. You never know who someone knows, and podcasting lets you expand your reach. Your podcast might get sent to your next new client by their family, for example.

Is Podcasting Right for Your Private Practice?

This is entirely up to you! If you’re just starting out as a new private practice owner and have a lot on your plate, it might not be the best timing. But, at the end of the day, you know what’s best. If you’re looking to connect with more clients and expand your reach, podcasting would be a great marketing option for you. This is especially true if you want to land more public speaking gigs, are about to launch a book, or you’re creating a course you want to share with others.

You don’t need a sound recording studio. You can be in your home office or even on your couch with a laptop, mic, and earbuds. The getting-started piece is a low barrier to entry.

What Equipment Do You Need to Launch a Therapist Podcast?

Contrary to what you might think, you don’t need a major, expensive setup to launch a therapist podcast. You’ll need the following equipment for your therapy podcast:

  • A microphone to clearly speak into.

  • Your desktop or laptop computer.

  • Recording and editing software (Audacity is a great option).

  • Hosting software (Libsyn is a great option).

You’ll use Audacity (or another software like it) to record your conversations and edit podcast episodes. If you have a guest on your podcast, you can use Zoom to record the conversation.

How to Figure Out Therapist Podcast Topics

When determining what podcast topics to choose for your therapist podcast, be sure to put yourself in your client’s shoes. You’ll also want podcast episodes centered around what you’re genuinely passionate about. Here are some ideas to get you started on topics for your private practice podcast:

  • What topics would my clients want to learn about now?

  • What areas are my current clients struggling in or bringing up frequently in sessions?

  • What do I enjoy teaching/sharing?

  • What topics am I passionate about telling others?

  • What am I an expert on?

  • What’s my niche?

  • What other experts would my current and future clients want to learn from?
