What Is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy?

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Defined

Differing from treatment methods commonly discussed in graduate school, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is an approach to supporting clients that focuses on problem-solving.

Mental health professionals often focus on working through the specific problems their clients are experiencing; however, SFBT shifts the approach so clinicians help clients in identifying the best solutions to issues and incorporating an effective plan of action to achieve those solutions.

What Does Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Involve?

SFBT involves four main criteria that includes the following:

  1. Define the client’s current problems.

  2. Clarify the change (end result) they desire.

  3. Identify effective solutions and a plan of action.

  4. Check in to ensure they’re moving toward their goal.

Hypothetical Example of SFBT

A client determines their relationship with a family member is causing them a significant amount of stress. They want to improve the relationship (the end result/goal), so they decide they’re going to communicate how they’re feeling to the family member and spend less time around them if necessary. After following through with their plan of action, the relationship between the client and their family member improves, eliminating the current problem.

By adding the SFBT specialization as a treatment option for clients of your private practice, you’re creating a more accessible environment in which the people you serve have the ability to choose what’s best for them and even have access to shorter, more affordable therapy.*

*SFBT is cost-effective for clients and can be an alternative to sliding scale fees and pro bono therapy sessions, which can limit your time for life/work and your private practice income.
