Your Perfect Day: A Simple Exercise to Build a Business That Supports Your Life

What If You Gave Yourself Permission to Dream?

Before you build a business, you need to know what kind of life you’re creating.

Too often, therapists design their practice based on what they’ve been told is possible, instead of what they actually want.

  • Maybe you think you must see 30 clients a week because that’s what your agency did.

  • Or you feel like you should work evenings because that’s what your colleagues do.

  • Or you assume that burnout is just part of the job.

But what if you set your sights higher? What if you created a practice that worked for you—one that allowed you to thrive instead of just survive?

The Perfect Day Exercise is about breaking free from the “shoulds” and getting clear on what you actually want. Because the truth is, you can create a practice that supports your heart, mind, body, and spirit.

Ready to dive in?

Step 1: Listen to the Guided Meditation

Before writing anything down, take a few minutes to fully immerse yourself in the experience of your perfect day.

🎧 Listen to the Perfect Day Meditation

Close your eyes, let go of distractions, and allow yourself to relax and visualize what a truly aligned workday feels like. Once you’ve finished, grab a notebook and write down what came up for you.

Step 2: Write Out Your Perfect Day

Describe your ideal workday in detail, as if it were happening today.

  • I wake up at…

  • I look around and see/smell/taste/touch…

  • The first thing I do is…

  • My morning routine looks like…

  • I go to work and my sessions feel and look like…

  • My afternoons are filled with…

  • My evenings are full of…

  • The people I connect with outside of work are…

  • Then I (describe your day in detail until bedtime)…

  • Right before my head hits the pillow, I feel…

The one thing I can do NOW to get closer to my perfect day is:

Optional Step 3: Up-Level the Experience with AI

For some, hearing their future life as a story makes this exercise even more powerful.

Try this:

  • After writing your Perfect Day, copy it into ChatGPT and use this prompt:
“Tell me a story of a day in the life as my future self based on this description.”

Then, sit back and read your future reality—letting yourself feel what’s possible when you make aligned choices.

Want to take it a step further? Ask ChatGPT:

  • “Create a daily schedule for me to follow that will allow me to achieve this.”

This will give you a step-by-step schedule with time blocking, routines, and habits to help you bring your vision to life.

If something feels off—if your schedule doesn’t leave space for what matters—tweak it until it feels right.

Optional Step 4: Make It Real

  • Create a vision board using magazines, Canva, or Pinterest to bring your perfect day to life visually.

  • Choose one small change you can make this week that aligns your practice with your vision.

  • Reflect: What’s one thing you need to stop doing that’s pulling you away from this vision?

Final Thoughts: This Is Where You’re Headed

This exercise isn’t about waiting until your practice is “perfect” to feel fulfilled.

It’s about designing your business intentionally, so you can start making shifts now—even small ones—that align with the life you actually want.

What did you discover while doing this exercise? Can you share with a friend? Or email us and tell us about your perfect day. We’d love to hold that vision with you!

I have successfully built a cash pay psychotherapy practice from scratch on a shoestring budget. I have also failed a licensed exam by 1 point (only to have the licensing board send me a later months later saying I passed), started an online study group to ease my own isolation and have now reached thousands of therapists across the country, helped other therapists market their psychotherapy practices, and helped awesome business owners move from close to closing their doors, to being profitable in less than 6 weeks. I've failed at launching online programs. I've had wild success at launching online programs. I've made mistakes in private practice I've taught others how to avoid my mistakes. You can do this. You were called to this work. Now- go do it! Find some help or inspiration as you need it- but do the work!
