Fulfilling a Lifelong Dream of Becoming a Full-Time Practice Owner

Brittany, LCSW-S, LCDC, CGP, offers therapy for individuals and couples with a primary focus on emotionally focused therapy (EFT) in Houston, TX. She also offers trauma treatment using EMDR and addictions treatment.

When Brittany first became involved with us, she had around five clients for her private practice and desired to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a full-time practice owner. But she was working three part-time jobs and wasn’t sure how it would be possible to have one full-time business instead — especially as someone who’s conservative when it comes to finances!

In December 2019, Brittany quit her job of 10 years, and in April 2020, around the start of the pandemic-related recession, she became a full-time, 100% private-pay practice owner. Presently, she’s working with clients remotely and has expanded into group practice with one employee.

How are you pivoting or supporting your community during COVID-19?: All services online using telemedicine; hired associate to offer sliding scale services.

Your experience with Bootcamp in one sentence: Amazing — exactly what I needed to get me out of my 10-year, full-time agency work to full-time, self-pay private practice.

How were you feeling before you signed up for Bootcamp?: I had wanted to go into private practice but didn't know where to begin, what steps to take, how to build a website, or market myself. Bootcamp laid out all the steps and made it all possible.

What did your private practice look like before Bootcamp started?: I only had a small handful of clients that I would pack in between my full-time agency job and my evening & weekend job. I was eager to leave the 2 jobs and just work for myself...et voila! (Not quite that quick but sure and steady!)

How do you feel after Business School Bootcamp for Therapists?: Hopeful, supported, guided on how to do it from 2 professionals that I trusted to guide me in the best steps. Haven't looked back!

How have your private practice and life changed after Bootcamp (processes, clinically, work-life balance, financially)?: I work full-time for myself vs. going from 2 other jobs, traveling between offices, scrambling to figure out how to get a life that felt balanced and joyful. Now I work for myself, have the flexibility I love, earn more money and feel thrilled that I'm actually supporting myself in my private practice!

What would you say to someone else who is on the fence about joining Business School Bootcamp for Therapists?: Do it! It is definitely an investment but my confidence grew steadily as I worked through the modules and could see a vision developing. My Perfect Day helped create an image of what I was working towards and the rest came together step by step. I love that I can circle back to modules I didn't complete or jump in to additional Bootcamps as I'm able. A great investment worth doing!

What do you wish you had known about private practice before you started?: That there is a method to the madness, it is possible, and the voices of fear and doubt don't have to be quite so loud. Glad I found Bootcamp when I did — changed my life!

Business School Bootcamp for Therapists: Increased my confidence as a business owner, increased my hourly rate, helped me get clarity on my ideal clients, helped me streamline my processes so I could spend more time on the things I loved, connected me with awesome healers from around the world, gave me a clear roadmap for what I need to do to have the life and business I want, helped me feel more confident referring out clients that aren't good fits, gave me the confidence to say no to insurance contracts that didn't serve me or my clients, helped me avoid problems in the future by setting things up the right way, helped me hit my first 5-figure month, and helped me expand into a group practice.
