16 Reasons Therapists are Attending the Most Awesome Conference

16 Reasons Therapists are Attending the Most Awesome Conference

Kelly, Joe, and I were all together in Orlando, Fl for the American Counseling Association's Annual Conference. As we were chatting, we thought we'd ask a question to the attendees who've already signed up for the Most Awesome Conference for Therapists. The answers we received gave us chills!

Reason #1: Connecting with Therapists Who Practice Abundance

I signed up for the conference because being around fellow business owners that practice abundance and encouragement fills me up! The greatest benefit so far is expanding and deepening the online relationships I've made. Anna Osborn, LMFT www.annaosbornmft.com

Reason #2: This is a rite of passage

4 Awesome Lessons from the American Counseling Association Conference

4 Awesome Lessons from the American Counseling Association Conference

#1. Get to know people.

Don't just focus on trading business cards or looking for people that can support you- focus on really getting to know people you are drawn to. Let relationships develop naturally and you might be amazed at some of the opportunities that will develop. Example: I met an amazing presenter and private practice owner from Russia and was able to sit down and interview him about positive psychotherapy and the challenges of developing a private practice in Russia (not much different than the rest of the World!) To do this week: Call 2 people in your area and really attempt to get to know them.

Post Your Question for Irvin D. Yalom- Yes- Really!

We get to video interview Irvin D. Yalom for PsychCentral. Let me repeat that. Kelly Higdon and Miranda Palmer get to sit down and have a conversation with Dr. Irvin D. Yalom- the father of group psychotherapy- the still practicing 84 year old psychotherapist.

Wow! So how did this happen? The really short story is we asked. The long story is that we have done a lot to build our business in the last few years that made it easy for Irvin D. Yalom to say yes! We will be sharing the Video Interview on PsychCentral in Spring of 2015, but we haven't interviewed him yet. And guess what that means?

I Wish Therapists Knew They Can Change the World

I love teaching. At the University level, little kids, therapists. There is something so inspiring about seeing someone realize they are capable.

I don’t believe teaching is really about conveying information. I think teaching is about inspiring and building confidence. People can learn ANYWHERE. The information is out there.

My Mission is to Inspire

While I’m not boastful enough to think that my teaching always hits the mark of inspiring and building confidence- that is my intention. Every. Single. Time.

It won’t change your life to know how to build a Facebook business page to market your private practice. What will change the world is you feeling confident about letting the world know your passion so you can do the transformational work you were placed on this planet for.

Teaching Psychology Students

Teaching young students at the University level you see this completely unabashed passion for helping people transform. Sure, much of the time it is uninformed, a bit misdirected, etc. but the passion is there. It is apparent on their faces, in their voice, in their questions.

Teaching Therapists

Teaching therapists finishing up graduate school or who have been in practice for a period of time is often a completely different experience. These therapists have SO much more expertise and knowledge than beginning psychology students, and yet you can see the reluctance to be “out there” at the same level.

Yes, sometimes this is due to the very true realization of our limitations as humans, our limitations as healers, learning appropriate clinical boundaries, not taking ownership of other’s choices, etc. But other times, it feels like something deeper.

What happens to therapists?

I know it is something deeper. I’ve interviewed hundreds of therapists exploring their practice, their passion, etc. And what I’ve found is that many therapists have lost sight of their passion, or their initial exuberance for the work.

The free private practice analysis sessions we do almost always start out with someone a bit unsure how to answer our basic questions about their practice and their vision. By the end of the session they have reconnected with their deep passion, gotten clear on their next step, and are reconnected with their passion.

As we go through the session I can hear the shift in their voice. I hear the confidence and energy come back. I hear the excitement. Am I imagining it? No, they tell me they feel it too.

Reconnecting with passion

There is something primal about getting clear about your mission, your vision, and your purpose on this planet. When any human gets clear, unabashedly, unashamedly clear about their mission and vision, things shift. You have energy not just for your work, but you want to shout it from the rooftops!

And it becomes more than just shouting for the sake of being seen, or getting new clients. You want to shout because you truly want to help your community. Your blog becomes a way to educate, teach, inspire and further your vision- not just a “to-do” list on your marketing checklist.

Your LinkedIn account becomes a way to connect with other people who share your vision around the world to consult with. You learn to use it to connect with other business people in your area to build strong relationships and get the message out locally.

Your twitter and Facebook account becomes a way to spread your message globally. Coffee dates become exploration conversations to find out what others people’s mission and vision is- because you want to deeply know them and be inspired.

Someone sharing a bland, disconnected elevator pitch doesn’t cut it anymore. You want to hear someone’s heart. You want to be vulnerable and share your heart too.

And yes, it is terrifying to share your mission and vision in such a big way. There will be crickets sometimes, or naysayers…. And it hurts a LOT more when that happens when you are sharing your something that connects so deeply with you on a soul level.

A challenge for therapists

Will you be brave? Will you do it even though it is scary? Will you share your blog even though it sucks? Will you record a video even though you hate how you look on camera? Will you talk to other business owners in your area without an agenda? Will you go to a business networking event even though it is awkward and terrifying the first time?

Therapists unite!

Our world needs more deep healing. You have the passion, the skill, the insight to help! Stop pulling back. Stop asking others who you should be, what you should specialize in. Your gut, your soul knows what you are meant to do. The farther you get from that space, the more out of sorts, burnt-out, uninspired, tired, and frustrated you will become.

Find your voice. Share your voice. Your voice can change the world.  Do you want some extra help and support? We are starting a video blog challenge that is all about connecting with your deep passion.

Miranda Palmer

I have successfully built a cash pay psychotherapy practice from scratch on a shoestring budget. I have also failed a licensed exam by 1 point (only to have the licensing board send me a later months later saying I passed), started an online study group to ease my own isolation and have now reached thousands of therapists across the country, helped other therapists market their psychotherapy practices, and helped awesome business owners move from close to closing their doors, to being profitable in less than 6 weeks. I've failed at launching online programs. I've had wild success at launching online programs. I've made mistakes in private practice I've taught others how to avoid my mistakes. You can do this. You were called to this work. Now- go do it! Find some help or inspiration as you need it- but do the work!

But I have TOO many ideas... Subtitle: LinkedIn Is Awesome

I know a lot of therapists that tell me... I know there is this "lincoln" thing... but I don't know what to DO with it! The are not talking about that tall guy with the funny hat- they are talking about LinkedIn, a social network site that is focused on maintaining and building relationships with business contact.

While therapists often dislike the idea of Facebook and Twitter because of the bulk of personal content, LinkedIn has MUCH less of that. People are on there for a purpose!

In fact, Kelly and I started a group on LinkedIn focused on marketing help for helping professionals. Starting a group is way to bring the people that you really want to network and connect with directly to you! It is especially powerful if you look at what is out there and find that there isn't a group that isn't already filling that need! As a group owner, you get some special perks- but that is for another day!

So back to the point- I asked people in the group what their biggest marketing challenge was- and this response by Kevin Bergen, MFT caught my eye. He is a couple's therapist in Los Angeles, and owns another groovy business focused on Therapy for Men in Los Angeles.

"Miranda, my struggle is having TOO MANY ideas! There's so many things I want to do, it becomes paralyzing. Kelly Higdon suggested I cut things out and just focus on a few (duh!), but so far I'm just not willing to let go of things. Can you relate?"

Kevin I can sooo relate! And, Kevin allowed me to use this question as a starter for today's blog. Here is the truth, most people have a MILLION awesome ideas! It is true! I too am always ready with awesome ideas. In fact, just today my coaching client was lamenting that she wasn't recording our conversation... "that was pure gold!"

How silly is that? But... what is the difference between a person with awesome business ideas, and a person with an awesome business? In a word:

I don't watch a ton of tv, but I am sucker for creative based reality shows... Top Chef, Project Runway, Design Stars... Again, and again if you watch these shows you will see them give the same feedback over and over again.

You need better time management

You need better editing (and editing allows us to use our time wisely)

I have a MILLION great ideas a day... seriously... I wish someone would just pay me to spout out awesome ideas... but alas...

The real trick is editing and implementing flawlessly. A great idea never implemented or implemented poorly, haphazardly, late, etc. isn't a great idea anymore... it is a flop ;0( Cue sad trumpets here...

So the question becomes, how do we learn how to edit well? Here are a few tips to help you edit those great ideas and implement one well and flawlessly:

  • Start with a clear vision of your life. Let that deep understanding guide your decisions.

  • Allow yourself to admit to your biggest, truest, passion in the whole wide world. This is TOUGH for therapists.

  • List out a million ways to carry that passion out.

  • Choose just one. Ouch...

  • Get outside help choosing if you need to.

  • Implement it really well.

  • Make adjustments as needed.

Once this project is running really well and moving forward, only then can you move into expanding or exploring launching a new project. Kelly and I struggle with this daily because we see so many ways we can impact our community. We also get so many requests for specific programs or products that would meet a real need-but we have to focus on one thing at a time. Otherwise, we get overwhelmed, distracted, and life gets out of balance!

The "M" Word: Talking to Therapists about Money

So this weekend Kelly and I presented at the 2013 Annual California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) conference. We go to present for 1 hour on Top Tips for Going Paperless. And while we did our best to pack as much in as we could in such a small amount of time- it wasn't enough! (We had sent in a 4 or 6 hour proposal for this topic and they gave us a 1-hour slot! (Which we are SO glad we got to talk and meet some awesome therapists!)

So... as we were agonizing about what we include on our slides, I noticed how uncomfortable I was with the idea of putting any words up that related to money or profits. Why? Because I knew that it would set off alarm bells in our audience.
