4 Steps to Creating an Awesome Event

We talk to a lot of therapists who want to create awesome workshops, trainings, conferences, webinars, or other types of events. We thought today we would share our top tips to creating an amazing event (no matter what type it is).

1. Focus on community.

The truth is, great events are just about information, they are also really about community. Whether the event is offline, online, a hybrid, an hour, or a week- create the kind of community that people want to be a part of. No matter how great the training is, if you don't like the people involved- you won't get the most out of it.

2. Focus on excellence.

I see a lot of people try to focus on something being "cheap" because they think that something being affordable sells well. Nobody buys something because it is cheap- they buy it because it is valuable. Create something really awesome, and then price it at what makes sense for what you are creating.

3. Create a business plan.

Look at the complete expenses- not just financially but also time-wise. Create a plan that will allow you to make the time and money you invest have a return- not in 3 years, but now. Many therapists attempt to get small business loans and find they are turned down. Why? Because their business plan doesn't create opportunities for profit that would allow them to pay their loan payments regularly!

4. Think outside of the box.

When Joe Sanok, Julie Hanks, Kelly Higdon, and I started coming together to talk about putting on a conference- we wanted to create something truly awesome. That meant not just thinking about the content being out of the box, but also the location, the business plan, the food, everything... We also wanted to think outside of the box in the way we involved other people. We reached out to awesome therapist services that we already loved and talked to them about being sponsors for the event- which allowed us flexibility in how we priced the event.

I'm not going to lie to you, there is a LOT that goes into planning a great event- especially if you decide to do a multi-day event like we are doing! Planning my wedding for over 200 people was easier than this! However, the community we've already created with the early bird enrollees is truly amazing. We are having so much fun with the monthly coaching calls, and even having the attendees get a say in designing the event so that they get the most of the process!

This is a good a time as any to give a huge shout out to the amazing sponsors of the Most Awesome Conference for Therapists. We felt really excited to know we could reach out to some of our most favorite resources (that we already rave about) and allow them to be involved in making this big dream a reality.

What about you?

Miranda Palmer

I have successfully built a cash pay psychotherapy practice from scratch on a shoestring budget. I have also failed a licensed exam by 1 point (only to have the licensing board send me a later months later saying I passed), started an online study group to ease my own isolation and have now reached thousands of therapists across the country, helped other therapists market their psychotherapy practices, and helped awesome business owners move from close to closing their doors, to being profitable in less than 6 weeks. I've failed at launching online programs. I've had wild success at launching online programs. I've made mistakes in private practice I've taught others how to avoid my mistakes. You can do this. You were called to this work. Now- go do it! Find some help or inspiration as you need it- but do the work!
